Jeff's Forbidden Closet of Mystery

"I declare that The Beatles are mutants. Prototypes of evolutionary agents sent by God, endowed with a mysterious power to create a new human species, a young race of laughing freemen." Timothy Leary upon hearing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Talking about Keeping your stuff private on Windows Live

Keeping your stuff private on Windows Live

I spent a good portion of the last year working on Permissions and Privacy on Windows Live.  We made a lot of progress but setting this up can be hard to figure out if you don't have a good strategy.  Here’s a tutorial that will help you see how you can use permissions settings on Windows Live so you can relax a little more about sharing your personal information online.

Windows Live

Personal information

  • Click “Profile” in the top nav
  • Click “Details” in the left nav
  • Every chunk of information says who you are sharing it with.  You can change this permissions setting by clicking on it (in this case “Everyone (public)”)

wlperm1b

  • You can let everyone see it, only people in your network see it (that’s people in your Hotmail address book, on your Profile, and in IM), or your extended network (that’s friends of friends)

wlperm2

  • You can also make your own categories of people and permission it to them.

wlperm3

This is super helpful if you want to set up “close friends” vs. “strangers” distinctions for sharing bits of information and content.  When you add new people you can add them to a category and voila – they have permission to see only the things you want them to see!

wlperm11

You can go back and categorize all your people easily using the category dropdown on the People page:

perm33

  • You can also enter individual people

 wlperm4

Photos (Files and other things work the same way)

  • When you create a new album you have an opportunity to set the permissions

perm6

  • You can limit it to your network so only your friends will see it

perm7

  • Or you can get the more detailed options shown above if you click “Select people”

wlperm8

  • You can also go back and change the permissions settings for old photo albums by clicking the “Shared with:” link at the bottom

wlperm9

Facebook works in much the same way – I’ll post a tutorial on that soon.

What's the legal status of owning foreign companies?

Given that you live in the US, what can happen to you owning a company that does something legal in its country of origin yet illegal in the US?

Paul Constantine

When I accepted your Live! friend invite, it erased your message to show a more useful message like "Paul Constantine is now your friend." So I lost your email address. I'm doing this from my phone so later I will attempt more reconnaissance to find your email. But I would be very happy if you would send it to me again.

Microsoft Releases Desktops v1.0 - Virtual Desktop Organizer

Desktops allows you to organize your applications on up to four virtual desktops. Read email on one, browse the web on the second, and do work in your productivity software on the third, without the clutter of the windows you’re not using. After you configure hotkeys for switching desktops, you can create and switch desktops either by clicking on the tray icon to open a desktop preview and switching window, or by using the hotkeys.

Yosemite Extreme Pano Video

The Microsoft Pro Photo Summit is going on this week.  Scoble is doing some interviews.  He just posted a good one with Greg and Eric from xRez speaking about the Extreme Pano project I described in my previous post.  Greg demos  some of the initial stitching results streaming onto a Microsoft Surface.
